I painted this piece on location in the lively market of Olhão, Portugal. Drawn to the intense sunlight filtering through the parasol and the dramatic shadows and highlights on the hanging clothes, I worked quickly and intuitively to capture the atmosphere as it unfolded around me. The energy of the place — the colour, movement, heat, and background chatter — fed directly into my brushwork, which is loose and impressionistic.
The painting is framed in a handmade 3" wooden frame, painted in Farrow & Ball Off-White No. 3. The inner edge is finished with gold leaf, which subtly picks up and complements the warm tones within the painting, adding a touch of brightness and refinement.
